Course Description
EE491D is an undergraduate course on applied probability, stochastic processes, and statistics. Many UH EE students complete EE 342, but do not have confidence in their ability to apply probability to real-world problems involving uncertainty.
In the first part of EE 491D, we do an extensive review of the results and techniques in EE 342. Examples that are related to applications will be emphasized. In the second part of the course, we cover elementary random processes which are applied to communications, computer networks, distributed computer systems, systems reliability, Google search, software reliability, wireless networks, financial engineering, and so forth. The third part of the course is on statistics which is useful for machine learning and data science.
This course can be used as a Systems Elective or a Technical Elective.
Course Objectives:
- To strengthen the student’s background in solving probability problems
- To provide additional preparation for study of SDS (Systems and Data Science). This includes graduate courses such as EE 618, EE 640, EE 641, EE 642, EE 644, EE 645, EE 646.
- To introduce the student to stochastic processes
- To introduce the student to additional applications
